Pill bugs are common garden pests, you can find abundantly outside. Often called “Roly-Polies” or “Potato bugs”, these bugs are harmless to humans and can be beneficial to garden areas, but don’t belong in homes.

Pill bugs are common garden pests, you can find abundantly outside. Often called “Roly-Polies” or “Potato bugs”, these bugs are harmless to humans and can be beneficial to garden areas, but don’t belong in homes.

Characteristics

They range in size from 1/4–1/2 inch and are dark to slate gray.

Their oval, segmented bodies are convex above but flat or concave underneath. Sowbugs also have two tail-like appendages which project out from the rear end of the body. Pill bugs have no posterior appendages and can roll up into a tight ball when disturbed for which they are sometimes called “roly-polies”.

Harborage

Sowbugs and pill bugs live in moist environments outdoors but occasionally end up in buildings.
